  • Tulemar Guest Spotlight: The Frahm Family

Nothing makes us happier than when a family chooses to make lifelong memories together right here at Tulemar. What an honor! That’s why we were thrilled when we met the Frahm family.

Jill and Geoff, along with their two girls Emmy (age 9) & Addy (age 11), came to visit us all the way from Loveland, Colorado. They had never been to Costa Rica before, but it was on their bucket list and after a lot of research they realized it was the perfect destination for the whole family.

Jill loves to put in the time to research their vacations, and once they decided on Costa Rica she was able to narrow down exactly what she needed: a place that is family friendly, has a great beach, and has lots of amenities and wildlife. Luckily for all parties involved, Tulemar checks all those boxes!

The Frahms chose one of our original Tulemar bungalows. Jill said that the ocean and sunset views were spectacular, and the bungalow was absolutely perfect for a family of 4 (we couldn’t agree more, Jill!).

We could continue to tell you how wonderful their vacation was, but we think you’d prefer to hear it straight from the mouths of sweet Emmy and Addy:

Tulemar: We are so happy to hear you loved your vacation! How did you react when your parents told you you were going to Costa Rica?

Addy: I was really, really, really excited and I couldn’t wait!

Emmy: I was really excited and happy that we were going to go!

T: We certainly hope that we lived up to all your expectations! What was your favorite thing about visiting Costa Rica?

A:  I loved all of the nature; flowers and animals! Snorkeling was awesome.

E: I have two favorite things: snorkeling and seeing all of the interesting animals at Tulemar!

T: Oooo, snorkeling! How fun! That’s something you can do at the beach, or in the pool. Which did you like best: The Tulemar Pools or Beach?

A & E: The beach! We like the hermit crabs and the boogie boards. But we liked the waterfall at the family pool, too.

T: Those are some of our favorite things too! What was your favorite activity that you did on your vacation?

A & E: Boogie boarding and zip lining!

T: How fun. I bet you got to see a lot of wildlife while you were zip lining! How many animals did you see on your trip?

E: We lost track! A million?

A: Sloths, white-faced monkeys, iguanas, geckos, macaws, toucans, turtles, dolphins, fish…

T: That’s a lot! What was your favorite animal that you saw?

A: Baby squirrel monkeys and dolphins!

E: I have two, okay 3! Sea turtles in the ocean that we saw on our catamaran cruise, hermit crabs on the beach, and the sloths everywhere!

T: Okay, lets talk food! What was the best thing you ate in Costa Rica?

A: We got room service from Tule Cafe one morning for breakfast and the vanilla pancakes were my favorite!

E: Yep the pancakes and bacon!

T: You girls seem like you have good taste! Pancakes via room service? We are all about that! What was the funniest thing to happen on your trip?

A: The funny kissing sound the geckos make at night when they’re eating bugs or talking to each other.

E: The mommy monkey with her baby that jumped right over my head at the national park!

T: Wow! What awesome memories! What was the coolest thing about Tulemar?

A: How connected to nature we were and the free boogie boards!

E: Tons of animals right outside our bungalow.

T: And what five words would you use to describe your vacation?

A: Thrilling, blissful, amazing, different, green.

E: Amazing, beautiful, wildlife, stay-there-forever, hot.

T: Those are awesome words… We may need to put you to work in our marketing department! If your friend was going to visit Costa Rica, what would you be sure she knew before she left?

A: The moving shells on the beach are little crabs, and if you don’t see any shells on the beach just grab goggles and dive a little bit in the ocean and they’re everywhere! Also the big grey fuzzy blobs in the trees are sloths!

E: There’s tons of wildlife, you’re going to have a lot of fun, and it’s hot! Do the snorkel tour with Sunset Sails…we saw turtles and dolphins! And go zip lining.

T: GREAT tips! Lastly, how is Costa Rica different than where you live?

A: There’s more variety of plants, more hills, and you have to use lots of sunscreen, it’s hot!

E: It’s hotter than Colorado, more exotic animals, cool plants, food is different…in a good way.

There you have it, folks. Book your snorkel tour, pack your sunscreen, bring your camera, and head on down to make some memories of your own. We are waiting for you.

  • Tulemar Beach Wins Award for 12th Year in a Row

Tulemar Beach has done it again! We are the proud recipients of the Blue Flag Ecological Program award for the 12th year in a row! If you’re unfamiliar with what this is, we actually wrote a blog post last year when we won the same award (what can we say, we’re creatures of habit). Check it out:

It’s no secret that Costa Rica has been blessed with some of the most breathtaking natural scenery in the world. It’s lush landscapes and vast picturesque coastlines make Costa Rica a top destination for tourists and gives the locals a lot to be proud of.  That’s why Costa Rica has several programs in place meant to serve and protect the environment to ensure that locals and tourists alike can enjoy the country’s natural gifts for years to come.

A perfect example is the Blue Flag Ecological Program (Bandera Azul Ecológic). The program is meant to protect the nation’s coastal ecosystems, prevent beach pollution, and honor those who are doing their part to keep Costa Rica a top destination in ecotourism.

Every year, the Blue Flag Ecological Program grants a prestigious award and certification to beaches that score a minimum of 90% in categories including water quality, coastal sanitation, tourist safety, beach access to garbage containers, drinking water quality, signage, amongst others. Beaches who win the award are monitored monthly to ensure their efforts are being sustained throughout the year.

At Tulemar, we consistently play our part in ensuring we keep Mother Earth clean and protected, and we are thrilled to announce that our efforts have contributed to our 11th annual Blue Flag Program award and certification! This means that the Tulemar Beach is recognized as one of the top beaches in Costa Rica for its cleanliness and ongoing sustainability.

Have you been to the Tulemar Beach yet? If not, come see what makes this place so wonderful!

We are feelin’ hot, hot, hot, and it’s not just because it’s summer year round here in Costa Rica! The Tulemar Bamboo Villas were recently listed (ahem, in the #1 spot, might we add) in Cosmopolitan Magazine — once more for those in the back: COSMOPOLITAN Magazine — in the very sultry and sexy article aptly titled “The 30 Sexiest Hotels in the World”.  Yes, you read that right… In the WORLD. We’re not blushing, you are.

We always knew that these stunning villas were romantic, luxurious, and dare we say it, sexy. But, we know we are biased so sometimes we need some outside validation. And, boy did we get it. Nobody knows sexy like Cosmopolitan Magazine, and their write up us has feeling, well, a little hot and bothered.

Isn’t it so funny how you know a hotel is sexy if it has a see-through bathroom? As if you’re doing absolutely nothing in the shower besides having super-voyeuristic sex?

Erotic hotels have a whole vibe that’s mostly corny but also kinda hot…and they should be recognized for their extra efforts in helping you and bae have a truly bangin’ vacation. That said, read on for our guide to the sexiest hotels in the world.

#1 Bamboo Villas, Tulemar in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica

The Tulemar Bamboo Villas have open-air, three-stories and private infinity pools, showers, and some truly mind-blowing views of the ocean. There’s also a personal concierge who can arrange for chilled champagne and rose petals for an added touch.

  • Close Sloth Encounter at Tulemar’s Private Villa Casa de Frutas

Can you think of any other animal that is quite as adorable as a sloth? They’ve become very trendy lately, and for good reason! They’re curious, smiley, sweet, and oh-so-cute. We have guests that come all the way to Tulemar just in hopes of seeing one of the many wild or rehabilitated sloths we have on site thanks to The Sloth Institute of Costa Rica. (FYI, it’s VERY likely to see them during your stay – sometimes from your very own private villa!)

For our recent Casa de Frutas guests, their wish for seeing a sloth up close and personal became a reality when a curious little sloth decided to pop by their villa to say hello.

To their surprise, the sloth took a liking to the rain chain right outside the Casa de Frutas dining area. Because of the open-air concept of the villa, he was as close as he could get to being inside their rental. It made for great pictures and wonderful experience for the family. Check out their pics:

While the sloth looks adorable, and possibly even hungry, we want to remind all guests to never touch or feed the wildlife. This is for their safety, as well as yours. Remember, we are visitors in their home!

Tulemar in the News: Coastal Living Magazine

At Tulemar, we do coastal living right… Which makes it a no-brainer that we’d be featured in an article by Coastal Living magazine.

The article came after news broke about our TripAdvisor listing winning the award of #1 Hotel in the World. As if that news wasn’t big enough, having a feature in Coastal Living was the cherry on top of our tres leches cake!

When it comes to booking a vacation, where you stay can be just as important as where you go. Some might base their decision on a hotel’s killer swimming pool, while others are lured by the swoon-worthy spa.

But if what you’re after is overall greatness—based on feedback from millions of travelers around the world—you might want to add the off-the-beaten-path beaches of Costa Rica to your vacation bucket list. According to TripAdvisor’s annual Traveler’s Choice Awards, the one hotel that earns the most positive report card in 2019 isn’t a big-name chain in a big-time tourist destination. It’s a 33-acre “jungle resort” in the Costa Rican town of Manuel Antonio.

Perched on the Pacific Coast with a beautiful private beach, the Tulemar Bungalows & Villas is a part-hotel, part-residential development surrounded by greenery and wildlife. With just eight resort-owned bungalows, the majority of stays are privately owned vacation villas managed by the resort. On TripAdvisor, the property’s earned a near-perfect record from traveler reviews, with almost 3,000 five-star ratings.

And we can’t help but think that—coupled with the property’s stunning accommodations—it’s the unique beauty of the setting that sets it apart. Perched on a hillside, much of the rental units are surrounded by tropical foliage and gifted with views of the Pacific. There’s a draw for wildlife enthusiasts, too: Because of its rugged location, Tulemar is also home to the Sloth Institute of Costa Rica, which aims to enhance the conservation of wild and captive sloths through research and education.

Naturally, sloth (and monkey and macaw) spotting is as much an activity here as is lounging on the sun-soaked beaches. Which, in and of itself, explains why Tulemar should absolutely have a place on your travel wish list.

Want to book now? According to TripAdvisor, you can slip into this sloth sanctuary and seaside paradise for an average cost of $243 per night, with stays including full kitchens, living rooms, and oceanview terraces.

  • Tulemar Resort in the News: Forbes Magazine

If we can’t be on the cover of Forbes Magazine (Hey! Don’t give up on us yet!), we’ll settle for an article.

Recently we have been getting some media features, and we’d be lying if we said we aren’t proud of an article in Forbes that features Tulemar’s gorgeous – if we do say so ourselves – resort.

TripAdvisor, the world’s largest travel site, has released its eagerly-anticipated Travellers Choice Awards for  the Best Hotels of the World based on the millions of reviews and opinions collected during the last year from travelers worldwide – and it features many surprises.

Now in its 17th year, the awards determined by an algorithm based on all reviews and opinions from TripAdvisor users, are divided into nine categories including Top Hotels Overall, Luxury, Bargain, Small, Best Service, B&Bs and Inns, Romance, Family and All-Inclusive.

The total number acknowledged amounts to 7,812 properties in 94 countries.

Sounds like a lot? TripAdvisor fields an average of 390 million unique visitors a month with more than 280 new reviews posted on the site every minute. Hence the big numbers.

The winners of the Travellers Choice Awards vary from a luxury hotel built inside ancient caves in Cappadocia, Turkey, and a Riad in Marrakech, Morocco, to an island resort in Belize, a spa in the Austrian Alps and deluxe suites in Spain’s Canary Islands.

The #1 hotel in the list of 2019’s “Top 25 hotels in the world” is the Tulemar Resort & Beach, located in Manuel Antonio, Quepos, Costa Rica, and described as “a 33 acre resort with a collection of over 50 accommodations ranging from rustic bungalows to luxurious private villas, surrounded by jungle and  wildlife: you’ll see monkeys, sloths and exotic birds throughout the property and on our hiking trails.”

  • The Sloth Institute at Tulemar Saving Lives with Sloth Speedways

If you’ve ever been to Tulemar, or even just Manuel Antonio, you may remember seeing colorful ropes connecting the treetops. These ropes aren’t placed by mistake. They are “sloth speedways” that have been cleverly placed by The Sloth Institute of Costa Rica to help sloths (and other wildlife!) get safely from tree to tree.

You may wonder why these animals need these ropes to effortlessly migrate when the ropes were never a necessity before. Unfortunately, rapid deforestation has caused sloths to lose their ability to acquire food & safety easily, which has led them to depend on crossing busy roads or using electrical wires to get from point A to point B. These methods of migration have proven to be dangerous to sloths, and puts them at severe risk of injury or death.

The Sloth Institute – which has its research and release facility right inside Tulemar’s property – has dedicated themselves to building “sloth speedways” in areas that are high traffic for sloths and monkeys but have become nearly inaccessible. These speedways have helped the creatures continue their natural migration patterns, and has saved many lives!

If you’re interested in learning more about The Sloth Institute and how you can help in their efforts to saving sloths, visit their website here.

The list breaks down the best of global travel, including must-see destinations, restaurants, and hotels. At the top of this year’s list is Tulemar in Costa Rica, which was named the top Travelers’ Choice hotel in the world.

  • 3 Animals You are Sure to Hear in Manuel Antonio

If you are reading this blog, it’s probably safe to assume that you have done all the research you can to fully prepare yourself for your upcoming Costa Rican adventure (lucky you!). We are guessing that you’ve made a list of all the best tours to experience, the most delicious restaurants in the area, and which animals you are sure to see.

But, have you prepared yourself for all the animals you are going to hear while in Costa Rica? It’s something that is often not thought about until you arrive in the jungle and you hear what sounds like a gorilla outside your bedroom window.

Spoiler alert: That’s not a gorilla… It’s one of the animals on our “noisy” list below! So, prepare to be prepared even more than you already thought. Here are our 3 animals that you are sure to hear while in Manuel Antonio:

    • Howler Monkeys
      • Howler monkeys are the world’s loudest land mammal, and they’ll make sure you know it. Referred to as “Costa Rica’s Alarm Clock”, these guys love to warm up their voices first thing in the morning as the sun rises. Their loud growling, howling, and grunting sounds so intimidating that some people even mistake it for a gorilla (don’t worry, we don’t have those here.). But don’t be fooled, the Howlers are as harmless as they are noisy!
    • Geckos
      • We certainly hope you don’t have a phobia of lizards, because little house geckos are abundant in Costa Rica. They can be found crawling on your floors, walls, and ceilings, and they are excellent at keeping the insects at bay.  They don’t consistently make noise, but when they do  they make sure you hear it. Their high-pitched chirping may startle you the first time you hear it, especially if you are sitting in the comfort of your home and not expecting to hear a little animal sound! But don’t worry, it’s just a little gecko letting you know he’s about to eat the troublesome mosquito that has been scouting you out.
    • Scarlet Macaws
      • If you’ve never seen a Scarlet Macaw, you are in for an absolute treat. These majestic creatures love to put on an air show, and the best part is they always announce when they’re coming. Their loud prehistoric squawk can be heard from afar as the Macaws round the corner for a gorgeous fly by. It’s the perfect heads up that they’re on their way and you should get your camera ready!

  • Costa Rican Tamale Recipe

Tamales are a Christmas tradition in Costa Rica. These delicious and savory little guys can be found all throughout the country during the holidays — and sometimes even year round, especially in touristy areas.

If you can’t make the trek to Costa Rica for Christmas, but you’re craving this delicious Christmas tradition, fear not! We found a recipe from our friends at Costa Rica Guide so you can make holiday tamales at home!

    Costa Rican Tamale Recipe

2 lbs instant corn masa mix
3 lbs (1.4 kg) pork shoulder roast -or- beef roast -or-
    boneless chicken

¼ lb (110 gr) pork lard (or vegetable shortening)
1 cup (240 ml) corn oil
1 batch (~5 cups cooked Tico style rice, see ingredient list and recipe below)
    2 ¼ lbs (1 kg) potatoes
    8 cloves of garlic
½ lb (225 gr) sweet or hot peppers to taste
    1 large onion (optional)
2 ¼ lbs (1 kg) banana leaves (corn husks can be substituted, or if desperate aluminum foil)
coriander leaves (cilantro), salt, black pepper, cumin, oregano, achiote (annato)

    Regional Tamale ingedients
Tamales often include little regional surprises like olives or garbanzos

If you are adventurous and demand complete authenticity, you must start from raw corn ground for tamales (3 lbs, 1.4 kg Maíz cascado, malido crudo). Soak the flour in water then rinse it well, cook with a tablespoon of achiote, and a little of the garlic and peppers in salted water to just cover until tender then stand overnight. The next day, knead it into dough. You should probably have a demonstration first if you’re going to try this method. For first timers we’d suggest the Masa version described below.

Chop the meat into large (2″, 5 cm) chunks then brown on high heat in the ½ cup lard or vegetable oil. Add the chopped garlic, peppers, onion, 1 teaspoon salt, 1teaspoon cumin, ½ teaspoon black pepper, and 1 teaspoon salt for the last minute or two of browning, then cover with water and simmer until very tender (2-3 hours). Remove the meat from the broth and reserve the broth. When the meat is cool shred it finely. While the meat is simmering prepare the potatoes and rice.

Peel the potatoes and boil with salt, cilantro, and oregano to taste until soft. Cool and cut into ½ inch (1 cm) cubes.

    Rice Tico style

    3-5 sprigs cilantro (coriander leaf)
1 small or half a medium onion
½ small red or yellow sweet pepper (optional)
3 cups (700 ml) chicken broth or water
2 cups (350 ml) white rice
    ½ teaspoon (2.5 ml) salt
1 Tablespoon (15 ml) vegetable oil

Chop cilantro, onion, and sweet pepper very fine. Add 1 Tablespoon oil to a large pan and sauté the dry rice for 2 minutes over medium high flame then add the chopped onion, sweet pepper and cilantro and sauté another 2 minutes. Add water or chicken broth, bring to a boil, cover and reduce heat to simmer until rice is tender (20-35 minutes).

To prepare the masa, allow the meat broth to cool until it is just warm. To the dry masa add 1 tablespoon salt, 1 teaspoon ground cumin, and 1 teaspoon ground achiote, and mix dry. Then add the vegetable oil, mix with your hands while adding the warm broth. It should take about 2 1/2 cups to make a paste the consistency of mashed potatoes. Mix and add slowly, and if you over shoot on the broth and get it too thin, add a little more masa.

    Wrap the Tamales & Steam

Diagram to fold tamales in banana leaves
Diagram for folding tamales in banana leaves

Wash the banana leaves then cut them into ~15 inch (38 cm) squares. Spread 2 tablespoons of masa paste in the center, add 1 tablespoon each of potatoes, rice and meat. Fold as shown and tie with cotton string. Cook the tamales in gently boiling water for about one hour.

If you substitute corn husks, you will need to make slightly smaller tamales, pack the pot full and steam them rather than boiling them, because the husks won’t hold together while floating around.

We hope you enjoy these delicious tamales, and happy holidays!

4 Reasons to Travel For the Holidays

The holidays are such a special time. They’re full of cheer, good spirits, excitement, and love. They can also be full of chaos and stress, which may sometimes leave you wondering “is it worth it?”.

We love gifts just as much as the next guy, but we truly believe one of the best things you can do for your family is to forgo the presents take a trip for the holidays.

    Why, you may ask?

1.) No cooking, cleaning, shopping, or entertaining

    • Have we piqued your interest? One of the most stressful things about the holidays is the chaos of managing your gift list, figuring out when to shop, staying within budget, choosing a menu and planning the time to cook, cleaning up after everyone, then doing it all again the next day! When you travel (ahem, especially to a place like Tulemar…), all that can be taken care of for you! Plan to have a private chef in your villa, or pick a delicious restaurant for your holiday meal. Clean up? No need! Your daily maid service will have your rental looking spotless in no time. Entertaining? Your concierge will handle all tours and reservations so you don’t have to lift a finger.

2.) Give the gift of memories

    • We truly believe it is better to give experiences vs. things. Do you feel like your toy room is cluttered and your kids already have everything they could ever want, and then some? Giving your family a memory of a lifetime is far more valuable than giving them the trendiest gadget that will get old in 6 months. You’re allowing them to learn and see new cultures, bond with their family, and experience life a little bolder. How can you say no to that?

3.) An easy place for everyone to meet

    • Interested in bringing extended family along for the ride? Sometimes family members can be scattered about, and choosing whose house to host your holiday can be seriously headache inducing. Plan to all meet in one place so no one gets stuck with all the cooking and cleaning.

4.) No need to entertain the kids during Christmas Break

    • Do you dread having the kids out of school for Christmas Break because that means constantly needing to entertain them? Hey, just bring them on vacation and they (and you) will be as happy and entertained as can be!

Pro Tip: If your family isn’t keen on the idea of no gifts, plan to bring a few small things to open while you’re away. Be sure to bring plenty of tissue paper, because it can be used in a “snowball fight” once everyone opens their gifts!

    Happy Holidays and Pura Vida,

  • Mirazul Featured on the Cover of Florida Design Magazine

If you haven’t seen the latest issue if the renowned Florida Design magazine, you’re missing out! Not only does Tulemar’s very own Mirazul have a featured article, but its stunning photography landed it on the cover page. Yes, we’re blushing.

If you’re not familiar with Mirzul, it is one of Tulemar’s incredible private villas that boasts a guest list of celebrity VIPs. It’s architecture, interior design, and open air concept make it truly one of a kind, which makes it no wonder it landed a coveted spot in Florida Design!

Here’s a little bit of what Florida Design had to say:

“THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT COSTA RICA,” KEY WEST-BASED INTERIOR designer David L. Smith says. “The wild life, the climate, the proximity to nature, a rugged rainforest fronted by both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans …” With his early involvement in what would result in a 6,800-square-foot aviary overlooking the sea, Smith still seems awestruck by the grandeur he along with the architectural team and builder created from the jungle mountainside.

While the well-traveled homeowners could have lived any place, the gated community of Tulemar in central Costa Rica already had an infrastructure for water and electricity supplied to the 33 one-acre homesites. “Yet there were challenges,” says Smith, referring to the strict codes to deal with natural seismic activity and the rolling topography of steep jungle terrain. “But for the owners to see ocelots, sloths, monkeys, and scarlet macaws … it was worth it. This place might just be paradise.”

  • 4 Reasons Why Tulemar is Better than an All Inclusive Resort

We often times hear people ask where they can find the best all inclusive resort in Costa Rica. Unfortunately, Costa Rica doesn’t have a ton of all inclusive resorts the way Mexico or the Caribbean do, and to be perfectly honest, we think all inclusive resorts are over rated anyhow! To prove our point, here are 4 reason Tulemar is better than an all inclusive resort:

    1. Personalized VIP service
      • Many people choose an all inclusive resort because they like to not have to worry about anything while on vacation. However, every accommodation at Tulemar comes with a personal concierge that will help you with all your wants and needs while staying at the resort! Want a fully stocked fridge, reservations at the best restaurant in town, a ride to the marina, or personal tour of the National Park? Your concierge will handle all of that, and more!
    2. Food & Drink
      • If you’re interested in having unlimited food and drinks, you can get that at Tulemar! We are centrally located with quick and easy access to all the best restaurants in Manuel Antonio, plus we have a beach cafe, and a delicious restaurant with stunning views on site at the resort. Want drinks served to you at the beach? We can handle that! Plus, all the on-site dining options can easily be charged to the room so you don’t have to worry about your wallet while lounging at the beach or pool.
    3. Freedom
      • With an all inclusive resort, you are boxed into a limited options, however, at Tulemar, your options are unlimited! Explore the town with transportation arranged by your concierge, have a yoga instructor come to your villa for a morning class, hire a private chef for dinner, or explore the authentic sodas in Quepos with no strings attached!
    4. Safety
      • All inclusive resorts are an excellent options for those who want to feel safe and secure in areas that may not be the safest otherwise. However, Quepos and Manuel Antonio are safe towns, and Tulemar is gated and secure with 24-hour security. If and when you leave the Tulemar property, you don’t need to worry about your safety with our recommendations, arranged transportation, and heavily vetted tour companies. You can relax knowing you are in good hands!

  • Tulemar on TripAdvisor

One of our favorite things to do is read reviews from our guests… We love hearing about their memories and everything that made their trip to Costa Rica so special, which is why we take great pride in our TripAdvisor page! With nearly 3,000 reviews, our TripAdvisor page is an excellent place to read first-hand experiences from guests just like you! If you don’t want to sift through all 3,000 reviews, here are a few of our most recent:

“This was the nicest place we have every stayed. Breathtaking ocean views, super clean rooms, air conditioning in every room, and gorgeous interior. The highlights for us was the housekeeping staff would come in and do our laundry and place all nice and neat on the bed or hang them in the closet. The house was spotless everytime we came home. The wildlife was so prevalent on the grounds, we ended up hardly leaving. Get up early and the whole place is alive. Our concierge, Brian, was so friendly and accommodating. Totally reachable at a moments notice to help with anything and even brought us brownies.” – angelhair76

“To say that our stay at Tulemar was memorable would be an understatement. From our personal welcome from Brian (our concierge) to the stunning accommodations of the Bamboo Villa – everything exceeded our expectations at Tulemar Resorts!
The Bamboo Villa is an amazingly unique structure – with 3 levels of private space – the first level with bathroom, outdoor shower, private pool and lounge area. The middle area (all open air) with dining table and kitchen (coffee/water included daily) and the highest level with the master suite, spa-like bathroom and balcony overlooking the ocean. From our villa we saw sloths, spider monkeys, capuchin monkeys, iguanas and tons of birds.
Above all, what stands out to us about Tulemar is the people. Simply put, they are amazing. Brian Q. is a treasure. His personality, warmth and kindness were incredible. He was available to us 24 hours for questions/issues and needs. He personally drove us to the market so we could stock our kitchen, he arranged our transportation, he brought us a lovely dessert/champagne during some rainy weather and most importantly, he arranged the most lovely settling for us to celebrate our anniversary by planting a tree (as well as making a sign for our tree as a surprise). The service was above and beyond and we give Brian 5 stars!
We dined at the TuleCafe several times, especially taking advantage of happy hour and sunset. The food was very good and the close location could not be beat! The shuttles around the grounds were convenient, especially with the rain!
We were very impressed with our outing at Manuel Antonio National Park as well. We spent a full day in the park but remarked that we could have spent 2 or 3 more days exploring the park, animals, birds, and insects.
Overall an amazing location, beautiful villas, and exceptional staff. Pura Vida!” – travelers1995

“Split a honeymoon, half at Arenal and half here to relax. Got a great deal and it was an amazing place. Great beach, room, service… Milagro and especially Chris were there for everything. Lots of sloths, monkeys and other animals. Shuttle services was a great touch. Pretty walkable to restaurants too. Really great.” – Kevin M.

“Staying in Tulemar was the most incredible family vacation imaginable. We had not traveled to Costa Rica before and this trip was beyond our expectations. Our concierge Ashley made sure our excursions were booked, answered any of our questions, and helped us with dinner reservations. She made us feel at home and was a great introduction to the friendly culture we would find all over the area. Our kids still talk about the sloths and monkeys that hung out near our villa, the private beach with warm ocean waves, and the pristine view from our balcony. We compare every vacation to Tulemar! You will not be disappointed!” – garydanawright

  • The Farmer’s Market in Quepos

Tulemar is fortunate to be located near several supermarkets and quick marts should you need any last-minute groceries during your stay, but if you really want an authentic Costa Rican shopping experience, we suggest visiting the Quepos farmer’s market, or “feria” as it is called here!

The Quepos feria is located in downtown Quepos near the marina (about 5 minutes from Tulemar), and is available every Friday & Saturday, weather permitting.

Inside the feria you will find handmade clothes, jewelry, shoes, seasonal fruits & vegetables, spices, plants, and sometimes you will even see dogs available for adoption through a local organization called PAWS.

The feria is an excellent place to stroll around and shop to help support the local community. We highly suggest adding this to your list of activities if you’re interested in experiencing local culture and meeting several hard working locals. Your concierge will be happy to provide you with more information and arrange transportation for you — just ask!

  • 7 Reasons to Visit Costa Rica in Rainy Season

Most people go running when they hear the words “rainy season”. We often get asked when the best time is to visit Costa Rica as many people look to avoid the rain here as much as possible.  We completely understand… After all, it’s hard to catch some rays on the beach when there is a thunder cloud overhead. However, we firmly believe that the rainy season here is just as great as the dry season, and if you’re not convinced we made a list of 7 reasons why.

    1.  Cheaper Airfare
      • There are major airline discounts during Costa Rica’s rainy season (May-November). So much so that it’s not uncommon to get airline tickets for 50% (or more!) off the price you pay during high season. That alone is enough reason to visit! We have found round trip tickets for as low as $200 from some U.S. cities.
    2. Cheaper Accommodations, Dining, and Shopping
      • As if saving money on airfare wasn’t enough, you can also save some major bucks on accommodations, dining, and shopping, too! Most places offer rainy season discounts with buy one get one free offers, half off offers, and more. Check out our discounts here.
    3. Less People
      • If you’re hoping to explore the country without hundreds of other tourists, rainy season is definitely the time to do it! You will find that the national parks, the beaches, and the tours are all significantly less crowded, which means you get to experience the beauty of the country and the locals undisturbed.
    4. Better Scenery
      • More rain = more green. In fact, we refer to rainy season in Costa Rica as the green season! The frequent rain provides the perfect atmosphere for lush greenert, plus it feeds the hundreds of incredible waterfalls that can be found throughout the country.
    5. Cooler Temps
      • It’s never cold in Costa Rica, but with frequent rainstorms and cloud coverage, the temps can get much cooler during rainy season! Expect a nice warm day followed by a cool and comfortable night. The average temperature during rainy season is between 75-85 degrees.
    6. More Wildlife
      • With flourishing greenery, less tourists, and cooler temperatures, the wildlife becomes much more active and visible during rainy season! After a nice rain shower you can expect the monkeys to be jumping from tree to tree and the birds to be playing.
    7.  It’s not always wet
      • Many people have the misconception that it rains 24-7 during rainy season. While it may rain most afternoons and nights, it’s common to have a break in the rain in the morning until after lunch.  This is the perfect time to play outside, soak in some sun, and enjoy some activities. Plus, some days it doesn’t rain at all!

Bottom line is, Costa Rica is the perfect place to visit any time of year… We hope to see you soon, rain or shine!

    4. Ocean Views
      • We’ve heard that vitamin-sea is good for the soul, and we can’t agree more! That’s why our amazing hillside location allows you to have panoramic ocean views from any of our rentals.

    7. SLOTHS (and other wildlife)
      • We understand this doesn’t even need an explanation, but we enjoy overdelivering, so we’re going to give you one anyway. There’s a reason The Sloth Institute of Costa Rica’s research and release facility is located inside Tulemar – we have just as much, if not more, sloths and wildlife than Manuel Antonio National Park. Not only can you see sloths, but you can also see monkeys, toucans, scarlet macaws, iguanas, and other amazing wildlife daily!
    8. Nature and Hiking Trails
      • You can easily explore the flora and fauna of Manuel Antonio on any of our several hiking trails right in Tulemar. Prefer hiking in a group? Enjoy the trails during one of our daily Sloth Walks guided by The Sloth Institute of Costa Rica!
    9. Free Shuttle Service
      • Since we are located on 33 acres, we understand the thought of walking from point A to point B can be a little daunting after a long day of sun and cervezas. Luckily, we have a free shuttle service that can bring you to and from the beach, as well as anywhere else within Tulemar.

    Last but not least….

    1. We are in the heart of Manuel Antonio
      • Manuel Antonio has been recognized as one of the most beautiful places in the world, and you’ll get to be right in the middle of it all! Plus, there is plenty of shopping, groceries, ATM, dining, and beaches within easy walking distance.

Now that we have you convinced, we can’t wait to see you soon!
