El Escondite

The English translation for “El Escondite” is “the hideaway” and there are no truer words that describe this modern retreat tucked away in the rainforest. This private villa with 180 degree views of the ocean and jungle is set in the center of Tulemar, perfectly situated for easy access to the beach, resort amenities, such as the restaurant and the front gate to the main street of Manual Antonio.  El Escondite was designed to provide a relaxed, modern coastal feel with layers of amenities, much like the owner’s homes in California.

As you enter El Escondite you’ll hear and see the waterfall coming from above, instantly providing an awaited feeling of Zen. As you reach the top of the first level, the relaxing infinity pool and spa set against the rich green background of the surrounding jungle will give you no choice but to quickly get settled and come back for a float.  This centralized point on the property provides the iconic Costa Rican experience of swimming while taking in breathtaking views of the ocean, serene landscape and wildlife, including monkeys, sloths, and magnificent color-rich macaws.  Just steps away, this level is also home to the first primary suite.  The modern simplistic design does not sacrifice opulence with an open air bathtub located on the large balcony. The second level offers two guest bedrooms, each with two queen beds and their own bathrooms. The second primary suite is also on the second floor with a king size bed and daybed that can accommodate a child. This suite brings the outdoor experience inside by providing stunning views of the sunset over the ocean and an open air shower that offers privacy while being surrounded by jungle.  All bedrooms have either ocean or jungle views and air conditioning.

Floating high in the clouds, the top floor is truly the showpiece of this villa with stunning views from the deeply green pigmented mountains to the deep blue ocean. The expansive sliding glass doors allow this area to be open air, feeling like you are living in a giant treehouse or comfortably enclosed indoors.  With a stunning, amenity filled modern kitchen, outdoor BBQ area, and large dining table this will surely be the gathering location of the property for guests to enjoy meals, lounge, and boast upon picturesque sunrises and sunsets that will forever be ingrained in your mind as you think back upon your Costa Rican vacation.

Guests will receive a personal concierge during their stay, and will have access to all the resort’s amenities including the beach, the 4 pools, and the on-site restaurant. Guests also are walking distance from many restaurants, grocery stores, shops, and ATMs in Manuel Antonio.

ANDRES BRENES – ARCHITECT – El ESCONDITE

Andres Brenes

Andres Brenes

El Escondite was designed by commission of two guests of Tulemar that fell in love with the landscape of the resort.

They are both passionate about the beauty of construction, whose interest is to live with nature in an open space of pure lines to integrate the experience of relaxed sophistication with the untamed biodiversity of Costa Rica.

Andres Brenes, an architect based in Manuel Antonio Costa Rica, is known for understanding and respecting the relationship between architecture and nature, promoting harmony between them and producing work that is perfectly related to their environment. The architect also believes that the organization of its interior and exterior components is essential for the balance of its structure and form. There needs to be a peaceful coexistence between its industrial and natural materials. It is here that it can enjoy the merit of being called a piece of art.

Located in the town of Manuel Antonio-Quepos, within Tulemar Resort, El Escondite opens between the jungle clearings, thus taking advantage of the pristine views of the coastal landscape.

In this special enclave, a set of coral columns defy gravity, causing empty spaces between them, which is where the architect decides to immerse the residents, trying not to create buildings or closed spaces, but to break them by letting them flow and interact with each other. The vertical transitions of the levels seduce you to explore higher and higher towards the interior and the upper levels.

An overlap of materials, textures and spaces are connected through bridges where the interior is mixed with the exterior and giving the occupant the feeling of floating on them.  It is in these spaces where this exchange takes place between the same columns that rise respectfully in their green surroundings and shelter the occupants in their voids, just as the human being guards his heart.

El Escondite is not just a simple spatial solution; it is an elaborate geometric complexity that gives rise to a sanctuary of freedom.

“The sophistication should seem simple,” says Andres Brenes.

Andres also designed SolAngelo, PazAmore and The Bamboo Villas all located in Tulemar.

We had the pleasure of staying at the new El Escondite for Christmas. From the moment we walked in we knew we were in a VERY special place. The house is beautiful. The pool area is perfect for a large family to gather. The kitchen is amazing and we LOVED the dining table. It was perfect for our large group. Not to mention being able to close in the kitchen, that was such a nice feature.

We had plenty of wildlife from a sloth hanging in one of the trees, the beautiful Macaws that hung out the entire stay, or the monkeys that made sure to visit us around the same time everyday. One of my favorite things though was the view and the beautiful sunsets we had.

We had one rainy night and couldn’t believe how amazing the house was that it had a waterfall built into the one ceiling. Such a cool feature!

I also want to mention how great Jaz and Carolina were our entire stay. They made us feel at home and spoiled us at the same time. They were the best!

Tulemar is such a special place and I wish everyone had the chance to stay there!

My husband and I are veteran visitors to Tulemar and have stayed at Casa de Frutas twice, Nido de Gansos, Pazamore and Tulemar 3-BR Casa. This time, we stayed at the newly constructed El Escondite and took our grown children. There isn’t one unfavorable thing I could possibly say about Tulemar or any of the casas, but the location and view from El Escondite was unrivaled. As so many others have reported, the attentiveness, genuine warmth and welcoming nature of the staff is beyond expectations and the food at Tulemar and the many restaurants in the area is outstanding!

One stand-out is David, who takes care of the beach visitors! Not only is he one of the hardest working—lugging around the chaise lounges and heavy umbrellas and tables to make you comfortable, we have come to call him “friend” and keep in touch and always look forward to seeing him. I must say that George, who covers for David on his day off is excellent, as well!

We will be back, time and time again because we have quite literally fallen deeply in love with this paradise.

    Until next time… pura vida!

This was our second trip to Tulemar. There were 18 of us split between Mirazul and the newest property, El Escondite. It is a fabulous “hideaway”. Amazing views of the ocean and resort, nestled at the perfect location between the main gate and the private beach. Our kids spent hours in the pool and hot tub.

The house staff were friendly, and took excellent care of us; from laundry, fresh fruit in adorable arrangements, meticulously maintained house and grounds. The staff on the rest of the resort, shuttle drivers, maintenance and reception area were always helpful, kind and always went above and beyond to ensure that our experience was five stars.

The property is lush, green and breathtaking. There is an abundance of wildlife to observe from monkeys, sloths, scarlet macaws, green parrots, toucans and so much more.

Our concierge, Mauricio, always exceeds expectations, making sure our every need or want were tended to. He also helped guide us to the best excursions and restaurants to ensure we had the best experience possible. This visit we did surf lessons, offshore fishing, Waterfalls Heaven full day tour (they were great ask for Josué & G), ATVs, and Mangrove tour.

We will most definitely be returning to Tulemar. It’s our favorite place on Earth.

You all exemplify the meaning of the gold standard. Tulemar’s hospitality is unsurpassed.

It was our parents 6th time at tulemar but all the 6 kids first time and holy crap! I can see why they insist on returning annually. This place is a literal paradise! El Escondite was also the nicest place I’ve ever stayed or most likely will ever stay lol I can’t imagine many accommodations being better. The views took your breath away on a daily basis and the infinity pool overlooking the forest/ocean with macaws nesting right in front. What more could you want?! There was so much wildlife on our property that we didn’t even feel the need to check out Manuel Antonio rainforest. In conclusion, I can’t recommend tulemar and El Escondite enough. I feel so lucky to have experienced this type of luxury without losing the beautiful authenticity of CR and can only hope it’s the first of many trips there!

Four couples stayed a week in Tulemar's newest luxury property, El Escondite, which translates to The Hideout. What an amazing, brand new, modern home with high end touches that speak to the local environment and materials. No detail spared, immaculately cleaned (daily), and each of the four levels (accessible by stairs or elevator) are innately unique. Take an outdoor shower in the ground floor grotto after a relaxing day on the beach, then head up to the first level and grab a cocktail from the patio bar so you can lounge in the infinity pool, watching the colorful macaws chase each other around. With one master bedroom on the pool level and the second master plus two other dual-queen bedrooms on the second level, getting to your room is a breeze. All four bedrooms are appointed beautifully with large walk-in showers and great linens. The top floor communal area and kitchen can be configured indoor or outdoor via the retractable (and expansive) floor to ceiling sliders, but leave them open and enjoy the breeze and unparalleled view of the bay. The indoor-outdoor design of the entire house is felt on every level, so it's an experience you just can't get anywhere else. I did not want to leave the property. Lastly, the staff comes by daily to clean and do your laundry; they're very respectful of your space and you hardly see them, but if you do, engage them, they're genuinely friendly. Take the plunge - visit El Escondite and experience the best luxury accommodations Costa Rica has to offer.
